Neti Is Practised By:
After drawing water through the two nostrils one should expel it through the mouth. Repeatedly taking in water (in this way), this Vyutkarma (Bhalabhati) cures diseases of phlegm.
Gheranda Samhita – I: 57
Sucking water by the mouth so as to produce a hissing sound one should throw it out through the nostrils. By this practice one can become handsome.

1.Jala Neti pot.
2.Luke warm (Salt mixed) water.
Kapalabhati and forceful, fast nasal sneezing (Alternate nostril).
Neti can be practised either in sitting or standing comfortably. One has to slightly bend forward especially for Jala Neti.
Luke warm water with some salt in order to make it slightly hyper tonic is taken in a feeding cup or in a pot with a long nozzle (Jala Neti pot).· The nozzle of the Neti pot is put in one of the nostrils and the head is gradually tilted to the opposite side till due to gravitational force, water from the feeding cup / Neti pot starts flowing through the upper nostril and comes out through the lower nostril. If the head is slightly tilt forward, no water comes in the mouth.
Breathing is continued through the mouth during the practice. The same process is repeated through other nostril.
Taking water inside the nose with the help of Neti pot and bringing the water out thjala neti 22rough the mouth, then taking the water inside the mouth and bringing it out through the nose (as described in Gheranda Samhita) is possible. It requires better control over the muscles related to that area and control over the respiration.
After Neti Kriya is over Kapalabhati (forceful expiration) should be performed. It removes the excess of secretions and water from the nasal passages.
1.Preparation of water: Water should be clean, fully boiled, then brought into the condition of lukewarm up to – 40oc and salt mixed (approx: 5 gms per lit.)
2.Clean and check the Neti pot before the practice. (Insects, dust or other foreign particles may stick inside).
3.Practise in empty stomach to avoid vomiting sensation. Preferable time is morning.
4.Nails must be cut neatly and hands cleaned.
5.Position of the head: Nasal passage should be parallel to each other for easy flow of water.
6.Keep your mouth opened and breath through mouth during the practice; otherwise water may enter into trachea.
7.Mixing of more salt in the water will produce burning sensation and if no salt is mixed in the water it will be painful.
8.Avoid spectacles. One gets sneezing if water touches the sensitive olfactory mucosa present in the roof of the nose. There will be cough if water enters into trachea or bronchial tree.
9.After Neti, practise Kapalabhati but don’t practice forcefully.
10.If Kapalabhati is found not suitable then perform Ujjayi type of breathing (breath in and breath out with slight closure of glottis), otherwise the water remaining behind can give rise to cold, sinusitis and headache.
11.After the practice if one feels dry, sore and raw in the nasal passage introduce few drops of ghee (Ghrita Neti) or milk (Dugdha Neti) into the nasal passage by holding the head back.

Risks and complications in performing Jala neti with a neti pot:
There is an information says “danger in neti pot” and danger in practice of neti. Is it really dangerous? Or your technique is wrong?I have seen many yoga students those practice Jalaneti with neti pot suffer with some issues. I find most of neti pot problems with wrong preparation of water, and in some students with their direction and breath. The common mistakes in preparing neti pot water:In some yoga centers students perform jala neti with cold water. Your water may be clean and drinkable, but it is not enough. Even adding some salt to the cold water will not help for neti practice. The teachers allow the students to do neti with such water. Some of them may find it fine. But traditionally and health point of view this is not neti pot water.
What kind of problems will you experience with this neti pot water?
The temperature of water must be very low to inner delicate layers of your nose. So jala neti water should be luke warm. Otherwise the common bad experience with neti practice is a sharp pain in inner part of your nose and either by side or center of your head. The pain will be more and long lasting.
Is there any fault with the traditionally given yoga neti kriya technique? I feel the mistake is wrong preparation of water for your neti pot.Can I mix the cold and hot water for neti performance?
No. it is not wise idea for neti practice .Because you are partially making wrong jala neti water. There are chances to you might experience pain.
Mixing of salt?
There are doubts that what kind of salt to use for neti practice. This question was not existing in olden days .The maximum use of salt is natural sea salt without any chemicals.
You can be more familiar with Iodized salt nowadays. The rock salt is popular and for health purpose it is more recommended instead of other sea salt as well as cooking is concerned.
But for neti pot I recommend clean natural sea salt without any chemicals or iodine .Because it is more comfortable compared to other salts for neti.
Then how much salt to mix with neti pot water and what will happen if the quantity of salt for neti is not correct?
Many practitioners are not aware about it. They either add more salt or less than the required amount while preparing water for netipot.
You will sharp burning sensation inside your nose if you add more than right quantity of salt for netipot. You will also get continuous liquid flow after completing jala neti due to more salt. The burning sensation, running nose and swelling in inner layer of nose might be experienced. Though neti practice looks very simple, an experienced teacher or practitioner is required to prepare water for neti pot.
In case if you do not add sufficient amount of salt for neti pot water, that is if less amount of salt is added, you will experience pain in your nose and head. There are chances that instead of relief from cold you may get affected with cold due to wrong preparation of net ipot water.
Some yoga students those who are trying to use neti pot for jala neti kriya or nose cleaning, unknowingly for many months without proper water, they suffer and feel this practice is very hard or not good for health.
In the same way if the netipot water temperature is higher than correct level you will get swelling and nose block.
These are the common mistakes done while preparing netipot water.
